Obese kids usually don't realize they have weight problems until other people point them out. This is unfortunate as it is probably in the form of teasing and saying hurtful things. Educate them. Obese kids find little motivation when it comes to hard facts about nutrition, serving sizes, and the details of a healthy diet. But there are ways to educate them without putting them to sleep every time you discuss food issues. Try illustrated books or reading the food labels together in funny voices. Think up entertaining stories about weight that get your point across in an inoffensive and lighthearted manner. Once your child's attention is focused on these things, sooner or later he or she will be curious as to what it all means.
For older obese children, expect them to be more attentive. Don't be condescending, just be frank and present the issues in clear terms. The more you can be open about weight and eating issues, the easier it is to confront problems when they need to be discussed.
Feed them well. Cook nutritious meals for your overweight kids and explore healthy snacks for them to eat instead of incessant junk food. There are plenty of great low carb snacks out there; the internet offers many recipes for fun and healthy food. Inject fresh fruit, vegetables, and low fat yogurts into their diets too.
Ditch fast food. It goes without saying really. Fast food makes obese children. Avoid fast food restaurants as much as you can.
Choose healthy drink options. Provide your children with healthy drink options like natural drink mixes. Cut back on sodas and fruit juice, both pure and artificial. Kids need to be properly hydrated and drinks that provide essential vitamins and minerals are far better than sugar-intensive sodas and juices.
